A Celebration of Haitian History and Freedom in Hanoi

From 11 to 18 of November, the Embassy of the Republic of Haiti hosted a series of events to commemorate the historic Battle of Vertières, a key moment in Haiti’s fight for independence. The celebration aimed to honor Haiti’s revolutionary past, focusing on its role as the first nation to abolish slavery, and to raise awareness about the nation’s history among scholars, teachers, and students from universities and high schools, such as Le Quy Don High School,T.H School , Reigate Grammar School of Vietnam etc….

The Battle of Vertières, fought on November 18, 1803, was the decisive conflict in the Haitian Revolution, resulting in Haiti’s independence from French colonial rule. Under Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Haitian forces defeated the French army, establishing Haiti as the first black republic and inspiring global movements for freedom and justice.

During the week-long event, the Embassy organized presentations, workshops, and discussions highlighting the significance of the Battle of Vertières, featuring insights from historians and scholars on key figures such as Dessalines, Toussaint Louverture, and Henri Christophe. The event also included cultural performances and art exhibitions, reflecting Haiti’s rich heritage and the emotional depth of its revolutionary struggle.

The Embassy emphasized the importance of education in preserving Haiti’s history and its legacy of freedom and independence. By bringing together scholars, students, and the broader community, the celebration fostered a deeper understanding of Haiti’s impact on global movements for justice and liberation. It also provided an opportunity to reflect on Haiti’s ongoing journey towards prosperity, while recognizing the challenges the country faces today.

Through these efforts, the Embassy aimed to ensure that the spirit of the Battle of Vertières—symbolizing resilience and the fight for justice—continues to inspire future generations. Haiti’s history remains a beacon of hope and a powerful reminder of the universal struggle for human dignity and freedom.
